If you’ve been sitting at home and can’t drag yourself to the gym to do a workout, just get outside! There’s so much to do with the longer days and warmer weather we are beginning to enjoy. Jump on a bike, go for a jog, grab a neighbor and go for a walk. The possibilities are endless and awesome. But don’t forget to include strength training at the HIT Center. That’s an important part of any exercise program. If you have questions about the cardio that you should be doing outside of the HIT Center, be sure to ask your friendly (or sadistic) trainer for some recommendations. Stay Healthy!
Fire Hoses and Rowing Ergometers
We’ve been enjoying the excited responses to some of our new toys that we’ve gotten at the gym lately. “Yeah, it’s hard, but what does it do?” That’s the question that I’ve been hearing quite a bit lately.
For starters, the fire hoses are about developing shoulder and core strength. The emphasis is on developing coordinated motor patterns, getting maximal exertion over a set period, and creating a more functional strength pattern than just using dumbbells alone.
“Why do I even want to try to set a record?” Because it’s there for you to break. Many of you have already tried jumping on the rower to get a record in the 500m, the 1000m, and 4 minute rowing for distance challenges. The rower is a great cardiovascular workout that is easy on the lower body, but still utilizes many of the different muscle groups throughout. We like to challenge you here at the HIT Center and have put it out there for you to try something different. Get after those records!
If you have more questions, feel free to drop by and ask us about any of our equipment and we’d love to help you try something new!

Working out to Music
You’ve probably experienced it already and you don’t even know it. You are doing your cardio, running outside at your usual pace when it happens. Your song. You love it. You can’t help but run to it. The beat just has a way of hypnotizing you and you are mesmerized by it. And when the song finishes, you notice that you are a little more out of breath, a little more intense than before your song played. Researchers have now shown that an easy way to pick up the intensity in your workouts is to increase the tempo of the music you listen to. People who listened to the same songs at different tempos worked harder and enjoyed their workouts more than people listening to the music at the normal tempo or a slowed tempo. So if you are looking for a little jolt to your normal cardio routine, just speed the music up. You might find yourself running faster, farther, and even enjoying it a little more. So rock out. Literally.
Have a heart (cardiac rehab)
A recent NY times article spoke about the new link that has been made between people who have had heart attacks and the frequency that they partcipate in cardiac rehabilitation. After a major cardiovascular event, people who partcipated more often in cardiac rehab sessions lived longer and had fewer re-occurences. What does this mean for those who have not had any sort of heart problems? It means that exercising frequently, in addition to dietary changes, can lead to a signifcantly lower chance of heart problems. Not only that, but your quality of life will be much higher. You will find that you have more energy, and will save money on your health care over the long haul.
