Summer Activities For Kids

Yes, it’s that time of year again and as a parent I’m looking for quality activities for my daughter to participate in over the summer. One of the things she will be doing (or I should say continue to do) is the kids camp – really more of a kids fitness class.

Exercise classes for kids aren’t the most popular things in the world with a lot of kids. Traditionally, clubs and fitness professionals design these fitness programs as if they were training an adult or athlete. You know what I mean… cardio that consists of treadmills, steppers and bikes and lets not forget about some core and functional training.

The problem with traditional workout routines for kids is that the kids HATE it. It’s boring and the only thing they have to look forward to is pain and discomfort – gee why would anyone want to do that (more on that some other day).

The kids fitness program uses everything our facility has to offer – turf, sand, ropes, balls, jump ropes, water jugs, tires and much, much more. Each workout is scientifically designed to provide a total body workout but has an emphasis on FUN. That’s right, FUN!!!! I’ve told this story before, my daughter has never really worked out before starting this program and I can honestly say that she has had some great results and actually looks forward to every workout. She loves the game based theme of these workouts. Whether it is soccer on the turf, obstacle courses, volleyball or basketball in the sand, each day provides something new to look forward to.

Kids Fitness

It’s no secret childhood obesity is at an epidemic level.  Physical education in our schools are becoming a victim of budget cuts and our kids are more and more looking to their computer or tv for entertainment.

So some of our kids are in sports so staying active and busy is NOT a problem.  But what a bout the kids who are not interested in sports?  I remember when I was young – ya, ya a long time ago :-)  we played outside, rode our bikes and had no problem staying in shape.  Today, as a parent, I’m concerned about the safety of our children as they play outside and the options for those not in sports are somewhat limited.

Instead of complaining about the problem, I decided to do something about it.  We have started a fitness program specifically for kids.  Our initial group has kids that range in age from 12-14 and the one thing they have in common is that they really don’t play sports, not very interested in sports and consequently not very interested in fitness.  I thought that it would be difficult to keep the kids involved long term but I was wrong.  The kids really enjoy the program, look forward to their workout and more importantly are getting great results – my daughter has lost over 10 pounds.

The workouts are designed to keep the kids moving the entire hour and provide an opportunity to PLAY!!!!   Obstacle courses, modified kickball games as well as numerous other combinations keep the kids laughing and motivated to return for the next workout.

So this sounds like a big sales pitch right?  NO!  I mention this to remind us all that we need to get back to basics, get active and have FUN doing it.  Take the kids out and throw the frisbee for an hour, chase the dog, play tag… most importantly just have fun.

How much exercise are your kids getting?

Do you remember the days where you came home from school and spent the rest of the day biking, rollerblading and chasing after your friends? These days kids sit for 7-8 hours in school only to go home and sit in front of the television playing video games.  Physical Education in schools is basically non-existent at this point.  Sports are getting so competitive that you basically have to be the best just to get any playing time.

These are just a few reasons why are youngest generation is now called Generation  O[besity]. Since 1971 the amount of overweight kids under the age of eleven have quadrupled. The sad thing is that there’s a 70-80% chance that an obese child will turn into an obese adult.

So what’s the solution? Teach your kids good habits now, if a person goes their entire life without working out what’s the chance of them getting in shape when their life truly depends on it?

Because of our rising obesity epidemic, I am excited to announce that this the Hit Center will be having a “General Fitness Kid’s Camp” which starts June 1st.  This camp will be 3 days/week for two hours at a time (12-2 PM).  The camp will be geared to having fun while getting a great workout.  My goal  is to get kids to love working out because that’s really their only chance of sticking with it later in life.

The camp will be open to any child interested, we can accomodate all ages and fitness levels. If you or your child is interested, contact me at (480) 981-0600. I’m really looking forward to helping kids realize just how cool living a healthy lifestyle is :)
