During the upcoming month of March, take some time to focus your exercise goals on benefiting not only yourself, but also others. Relay for Life events are peering ahead on the calendar. These are great ways to get involved with community events, supporting a good cause, and getting in a healthy dose of exercise as well. So for the upcoming month, begin to focus on how what you are doing can help … [Read more...]
Outdoor Cardio
If you've been sitting at home and can't drag yourself to the gym to do a workout, just get outside! There's so much to do with the longer days and warmer weather we are beginning to enjoy. Jump on a bike, go for a jog, grab a neighbor and go for a walk. The possibilities are endless and awesome. But don't forget to include strength training at the HIT Center. That's an important part of any … [Read more...]
Things to do in the next year
Often we make resolutions with the idea that we are going to change something in the coming year. I've found the most success comes from giving yourself a specific date to accomplish a smaller goal. For example, knowing that you are going on a vacation in March, you might want to set a small goal of losing 10 pounds by then. If you lose more great, but make it a point to start small and continue … [Read more...]
New Year!!!
What can I write about concerning the New Year that hasn't already been said? Instead of looking ahead, let's look back. What habits have you formed over the last year? For me, I did a lot of running and cycling which was very new for me. But I haven't kept it up. And it's because it wasn't something that I enjoyed. I ran because I was training for a half marathon. I bike sporadically, but I don't … [Read more...]
Go hiking!
Recently I went out hiking with the HIT Center's Sam Fearer. We did the Grand Canyon in one day. The hike down started with the South Kaibab trail to Phantom Ranch on the gorgeous Colorado River. The hike back up was strenuous to say the least. From the river up to the top of Bright Angel it is a 9 mile hike with about 5,000 feet of climbing. Round trip we did about 15 miles with 10,000 feet of … [Read more...]
Injuries
How many of us have been injured because of a sport or workout? This is the time when I'm going to let you think about your injuries and tell a few stories. Ok, did you get them all out? What about the time when you were doing that heavy lift? Oh yeah, you forgot that one. Working out has inherent risks. I've crashed my bike twice. I've broken an ankle and wrist during basketball games. I've had … [Read more...]
Fire Hoses and Rowing Ergometers
We've been enjoying the excited responses to some of our new toys that we've gotten at the gym lately. "Yeah, it's hard, but what does it do?" That's the question that I've been hearing quite a bit lately. For starters, the fire hoses are about developing shoulder and core strength. The emphasis is on developing coordinated motor patterns, getting maximal exertion over a set period, and creating … [Read more...]
Why not workout while watching sports?
My Sunday routine is slowly evolving. I can no longer sit and watch my beloved Lions play. So instead, I've taken to doing my long workouts on Sunday. It allows me to watch the football games, and get in a nice long, lower intensity exercise. It's also making running on the treadmill tolerable for me. Plus, it helps take my focus off of how much longer I have to run! It does also make it easier … [Read more...]
Kid’s Fitness Part 2
A few things to remember about your kid's fitness. First, they aren't just little adults. Kids play differently and need to work out differently as well. Because they often move in short bursts, sticking your kid on a treadmill may not be the answer to getting them in shape. Allow your child to be creative and play along with them. It might mean getting a little dirty, or crawling around, but it's … [Read more...]
Kids Fitness
It's no secret childhood obesity is at an epidemic level. Physical education in our schools are becoming a victim of budget cuts and our kids are more and more looking to their computer or tv for entertainment. So some of our kids are in sports so staying active and busy is NOT a problem. But what a bout the kids who are not interested in sports? I remember when I was young - ya, ya a … [Read more...]
